Why Post-Purchase is the Right Moment
Most retention marketing happens days or weeks after a purchase — email campaigns, retargeting ads, abandoned-cart sequences. These reach customers when their purchase memory has faded and their attention is elsewhere. For a broader look at repeat purchase strategies, see how Ezhance handles the full retention loop.
The moment immediately after checkout is different. The customer has just completed a purchase — purchase intent and satisfaction are at their peak. A reward offer delivered at this moment has a much higher probability of creating a positive next-purchase association than a re-engagement email sent 14 days later.
This is the core logic behind next-order coupons: deliver the reward when purchase intent and satisfaction are highest, not when they've lapsed.
How It Works in Ezhance Pro
Ezhance Pro's Order Reward promotion generates a unique WooCommerce coupon code when a qualifying order reaches a configured status (typically "completed" or "processing"). The coupon appears in three places:
- WooCommerce thank-you page — displayed as a reward voucher immediately after checkout, while the customer is still on the site
- WooCommerce order confirmation email — included in the confirmation email so customers who leave the thank-you page still receive it
- My Account → My Coupons — a dedicated section where customers can see all their earned, unused reward coupons with expiry dates
The coupon is a real WooCommerce coupon — with a unique code, discount type, and optional expiry date — generated automatically, not manually.
Setting Qualifying Conditions
Qualifying conditions determine which orders trigger a reward coupon. The most common approaches:
- Minimum order value — only orders above $X generate a reward. Rewards your most valuable customers and creates an implicit incentive to spend above the threshold.
- First order only — generate a reward only for a customer's first order. Specifically targets the first-to-second-purchase conversion problem.
- All orders — every qualifying order generates a reward. Creates a loyalty loop — customers who redeem the reward place another qualifying order, which generates the next reward.
- Specific products in order — reward customers who buy a specific product, driving trial and repeat of a particular SKU.
Setting the Reward Coupon Value
The reward coupon is a standard WooCommerce coupon and can be configured as:
- Percentage off the next order (e.g., 10% off)
- Fixed amount off the next order (e.g., $10 off)
- Free shipping on the next order
For repeat purchase incentives, percentage off typically outperforms fixed amounts for higher-value stores. For lower average order value stores, a fixed amount ("$5 off your next order") can be easier to communicate and value for the customer.
Setting Expiry for Urgency
Reward coupons without expiry dates sit unused. Customers save them "for later" and never redeem. Setting an expiry period creates urgency.
14–30 days is the most effective expiry range for repeat purchase urgency. It's short enough to create urgency (customers who were considering another purchase will be motivated to return before the coupon expires) but long enough not to feel punitive for customers with longer natural repurchase cycles.
For consumable products with short repurchase cycles (supplements, coffee, skincare), 14 days can work well. For higher-consideration items with longer repurchase windows, 30–60 days gives customers enough time.
The My Coupons Account Page
One underappreciated delivery channel for reward coupons is the My Account area. Customers who return to check their order status, update their address, or browse product reviews encounter their available coupons — at a moment when they may already be in a purchase-adjacent mindset.
Ezhance Pro adds a My Coupons tab to the WooCommerce My Account area, listing all earned and unused reward coupons with their expiry dates and redemption status. This reduces the common issue of customers losing their reward coupon email and never redeeming.
Measuring Success
Two metrics measure whether an order reward program is working:
- Coupon redemption rate — what percentage of generated coupons are redeemed? A redemption rate above 15–20% indicates the offer is motivating behaviour. Below 5% suggests the reward value is too low or the expiry window is too short.
- Days between orders (for customers who redeemed vs. those who didn't) — are customers who redeemed the reward returning faster than the baseline? This is the clearest signal that the program is working.
Ezhance logs reward coupon generation and redemption against WooCommerce orders, making both metrics accessible from order analytics.
Common Mistakes
- No expiry date — unused coupons pile up, customers never feel urgency to redeem.
- Reward value too low — 2% off is not a meaningful incentive. Start at 10–15% for percentage rewards, or $5–$10 for fixed amounts at typical AOV.
- Not showing the coupon on the thank-you page — email-only delivery misses the highest-attention moment.
- Generating rewards for every order with no minimum — on a high-volume store, this can create a large number of outstanding coupons that reduce effective margin. Pair with the Offer Safety Score to check margin impact before activating.
